HOME TIDBITS

The topic today is home computers.  We have four computers in our home.  Or it could be five if you count the server.  My son, Jacob, is a computer network wiz.  He set up one of my old cpu's as a server.  He put 2000 server as the operating system.  It is relatively slow, but a the sever doesn't have to be.  It has a 50 gig hard drive and that is only about 15% used right now.  it is tied to a Netgear router which is hooked to the internet through a DSL connection to our ISP.  The router is hard wired and wireless.  I have two desktop computers hard wired to the network and one laptop using a wireless card.  One of my computers is in my office and the other is in my garage/sport room upstairs room.  All can communicate to the server hard drive and the printers attached to the network.  That is nice.  I store almost all items on the server hard drive.  Each CPU has its own software stored on each of there own hard drives.  The data files are stored on the server hard drive.  This makes it very convenient.  That way I can open a file at each different computer.  I also store all my photos on the server hard drive for the same reason.

I have installed a card reader.  It is hooked to the network and it can read almost every card out there.  I use it for backing up files and ready my camera's cards.  I like it.

I have a simple yet high density scanner.  It is an Epson 1250.  It is a less expensive unit, but does all I need.  My office computer has two 19" CRT monitors.  They are both NEC Multisync FP950.  They are not made anymore, but they are good.  The monitors are hooked up side by side and act as one screen left to right.  I really like that.  Outlook on the right screen and the internet browser on the left.

Thanks
